Leo and Skylar

Skylar saved Leo and Leo saved Skylar. They were inseparable. Sky was the perfect mama. She made sure he was loved and cared for. She would snuggle with him and lay her head on him as Kaiya had. With Leo having up to 6 surgeries for cancer etc. Skylar would dote after him and make him feel safe. They were best friends with a language that was visible in their actions.

When Leo went for his walks, Sky would stay home due to her fear of the world. This didn’t stop her from living vicariously through him. When he would return, she would sniff every inch of him and imagine the trail, trees, dogs, people, and bushes he explored.

Skylar started losing her sight and hearing and had Congestive Heart Failure. She had a really hard time with anxiety, which was understandable. With all the medications, she was able to live for 14 years. She was a tenacious warrior and deserves daily celebration.

Leo had slowly been getting senile for the last 2-3 years of his life. His anxiety, whining, barking, confusion, and discomfort were extremely difficult for everyone. We tried everything. Once Sky died, he did not have a reason to live. He began to deteriorate and passed 5 weeks later.

Leo was my soul mate dog. He was my heart. We were so connected and bonded in a way I have never experienced before. The pain of his passing, along with Skylar’s, has been beyond intolerable.

When the grief seemed to be too much, I had to find something with a purpose related to them to help me through it. This is why The Skylar Project has taken form and why I have hundreds of earrings and malas that I have made in their honor and to heal my grief. My hope is that the sublimation of my pain will help other rescues and their parents during their journey here.

I believe in connecting like-minded people and organizations, we can make a village of support for the Pit Bull rescues and those that love them. I hope you join the team.
